Squash Club update

Hi [[firstname]]

While the club has been closed, the committee has been meeting on a regular basis to ensure that everything is being done to ensure that we keep on top of day to day matters and prepare for the reopening of the club. At this stage it’s not possible to predict when the club will reopen but we are all hopeful that the lockdown together with the vaccine roll-out will help. In the meantime, we thought it might be useful to update you on various topics of interest.

Membership

Having built the membership up to 250 over recent years, 2020 and the pandemic has been a challenge for Dunnington and most other clubs around the country. We are very grateful for those members who renewed during the lull between lock-downs, this was much appreciated and provided the club with some valuable revenue. For many members, the decision not to re-join or to freeze membership is totally understandable and we will continue to leave member profiles ‘active’ within mycourts until the club is ready to open. In the meantime, you need to take no further action. If you have decided not to continue playing squash please let us know, otherwise your membership will remain active.

We did have a number of new members join the club in the late summer months of 2020, this was somewhat unexpected and much appreciated. Most of the 19 new members joined on a 3-month trial basis, which was then cut short with further lockdown and tier restrictions introduced.

Our approach remains one of supporting our members, and where members have paid for periods where the club has not been open, we will compensate them with an extension in their renewal date.

Club finances

Many members have shared their concerns about the financial impact of Covid and have questioned whether the club has sufficient reserves to ‘weather the storm’. In many ways this depends on how long we remain closed as our only source of revenue is membership and court fees. While the club remains closed, we have no income. The main outgoings at the club are being managed closely by our current treasurer John Jaram and we have made good progress in minimising outgoings for rent and other overheads. As a result, we are confident that whatever happens in 2021, we will be financially sound, albeit with minimal reserves.

As you know, the club has invested heavily over recent years in court refurbishment and maintenance and some of the planned expenditure for 2021 will temporarily need to be put on hold. An example of this is the heater replacement and ventilation improvements. Hopefully we can get these items back on the work schedule but this is dependent on us rebuilding our reserves once we are open and operational.

John Jaram our current Treasurer is retiring from the committee and handing over his role to Jamie Miller from April 1st. We would like to thank John for his contribution to the club. Despite not playing in recent years, John has gifted the club with his time and experience and has made a very positive contribution.

Return to squash plan

This topic remains at the top of all our committee meeting agendas. We know that without the right plans and the support of our members, we will return with a much-reduced membership and a mountain to climb to rebuild the club. We would therefore like to ask all our members to support us in the rebuilding of the membership. If you have any ideas, we would be delighted to hear from you. As a club, we still have the best facilities in the area and we want to continue our work to broaden the membership.

Here is a list of some of the current initiatives:

  • Flexible options for members returning to the club
  • Return to junior coaching ASAP, with more capability
  • New schools initiative
  • Adult group coaching/development
  • New member marketing campaigns, mainly via web and social media focused on:
  • Trial memberships
  • Junior development via coaching and schools
  • Females, Squash/racket-ball
  • Returning to squash, past players, all standards
  • First time players, all abilities
  • Racket-ball, as an alternative
  • University students and those graduating and staying in York

It is the policy of the club that we will not proactively target players from other York clubs. Our aim is to increase the amount of squash players in the Y&D area and improve utilisation of all courts. If however there are clubs that can’t reopen, we will provide an easy transition for any members wishing to join Dunnington. We will also review visitor policies in the coming months.

We will update everyone once there is further information from England Squash relating to the reopening of clubs. In the meantime, if you have any questions or suggestions please reply to this email and a member of the committee will come back to you.

Thank you for your continued support.

Regards

The Squash Committee
