Poppie Jaram played a vital role in winning the under 17s Inter-county Championships

HI [[firstname]] Dunnington’s Poppie Jaram played for the Yorkshire Girls under 17s team at the Finals of the Inter County Junior Squash in Nottingham held on the 16th and 17th January. To reach the finals the girls had played 2 previous stages of round-robin matches against teams from other counties. The first held in Northumberland in November last year and the second at Warwick in December. In both rounds Yorkshire had topped their groups to ensure qualification for the finals weekend. The semi-finals were held on Saturday and the finals on Sunday. Poppie played at #3 in the team of 5 girls. On Saturday the Yorkshire team were drawn against Hertfordshire and all 5 girls won their matches; Poppie winning hers 3-0 dropping only a few points. On Sunday they then faced the other finalists, Essex who had beaten Sussex 3-2 in the other semi-final. Playing at #3 Poppie’s was the first match on court and knowing that Essex had 2 very strong players at #1 and #2 meant that in order to win the title it was essential that Yorkshire got off to a good start. After a nervous first game that Poppie won 11-6, she then settled down and went on to win the next 2 games dropping only a single point in each. As predicted Essex then won both the matches at #1 and #2. Fortunately Yorkshires strength in depth paid dividends with the #4 player from Sheffield winning her match 3-0 and the #5 from Pontefract managing to come out on top 3-2 in a very close nail biting encounter. So after a close match the Yorkshire under 17s won 3-2. As you will have seen from recent emails, we are trying hard to promote youth development in the club. Poppie is a great example of what comes from dedication and good coaching and we are keen to support her, and others on their journey to the top! Our congratulations to Poppy and her team.
